This activity set includes SIX engaging, challenging activities that are all rock ‘n’ roll themed! You can use them to transform your classroom for ROCK YOUR STCHOOL Day.Use them to spice up your students’ day. You can use them for art, history and STEAM activities. You can mix and match or choose what you want.

Activity set includes:

-Rock‘n’Roll Graffiti (Art & History)

  • Students learn about the history of graffiti, analyze included pictures of graffiti and note themes/trends, and create their own graffiti.
  • Rubric included
  • Approximate time to complete: 45 minutes
  • Appropriate for 3rd-6th grades

-Becoming a Songwriter (Music)

  • Students learn the parts to a song and write their own songs about something academic! Students can learn to multiply, write songs that include multiplication facts, as well as explain fractions. You can let your students modify the rubric to their hearts’ desire.
  • Rubric included
  • Approximate time to complete: 2 hours (with performances)
  • Appropriate for 3rd-6th grades

-Create an Instrument (STEAM)

  • Students create an instrument using items you probably already have in your classroom.
  • Planning sheet included
  • Approximate time to complete: 45-60 minutes
  • Appropriate for 3rd-6th grades

-Digital Breakout (Logic & Math)

  • Students help the mayor of “Sticksandstrings” remember the lyrics to his favorite song by going through a series of DIGITAL challenges and puzzles! This includes math and logic questions. Math problems include 2-digit-by-2-digit multiplication.
  • Answer key and walkthrough included
  • Approximate time to complete: 60 minutes
  • Appropriate for 4th-6th grades

-Rockin’ Task Cards (Math)*

  • 20 task cards and recorder sheet included; task cards are all word problems that include addition, subtraction, multiplication, and place value questions. All standards are appropriate to 4th-5th grades. It is possible to remove the larger multiplication problems in order to make it suitable for third-grade.
  • Answer key included
  • Approximate time to complete: 60 minutes
  • Appropriate for 4th-5th grades (3rd appropriate with modification, 6th appropriate for review)

-Note Decoder (Math)*

  • Students use a “key” to replace notes with numerical figures. Students use their knowledge to decode pieces of music and find a numerical answer.
  • Answer key, sheet music, and “note decoder” included
  • Approximate time to complete: 45 minutes
  • **This activity is difficult! This activity is recommended for students in 5th-6th grades. You could modify it on your own (modification not included) for younger grades or just leave it out of your rockin’ day!

Standards

Fluently multiply multi-digit whole numbers using the standard algorithm.
Recognize that in a multi-digit number, a digit in one place represents 10 times as much as it represents in the place to its right and 1/10 of what it represents in the place to its left.
Multiply a whole number of up to four digits by a one-digit whole number, and multiply two two-digit numbers, using strategies based on place value and the properties of operations. Explain and illustrate the calculation with equations, rectangular arrays, and/or areas models.
Fluently add and subtract multi-digit whole numbers using the standard algorithm.
Use place value understanding to round multi-digit whole numbers to any place.
