Estimated Time

It will vary depending on your age and whether you decide to do all of the related writing activities, extensions projects or projects within the unit. There are many options! For the teacher read-aloud script/class discussion, as well as for art lessons / cleanup each unit takes approximately an hour. You may need to add art lessons or write extensions.

Literacy Components

This program also includes literacy elements, which will help you integrate it with writing and social studies.

The world map can be used to help students identify the focus areas for each lesson.

Are there any early finishers who are eligible?

To help with reflection and reviewing, I included pages for writing, review, and word searches. There are also printables for the lesson, words search for each lesson, and coloring sheets for each artist or period. These are also great for literacy centers and extension lessons.

Refer to Reference Materials

All of the lessons can be easily supported visuallly by a quick web search.

Copyright issues: Art pieces Not includedHowever, it can be more helpful to present digital versions of paintings so that all students are able to see them properly. At the beginning of every lesson, I listed the title and artist of each artwork. Just type it in a Google search, and click “images” for easy sharing with class. To complete the unit, you don’t need to go to any other websites.

How to manage student work

You can keep all your projects in a scrapbook. This creates a wonderful portfolio. The cover of the scrapbook is also included. You can also display your amazing artwork on the wall, or you can glue it into your scrapbook with any extensions projects.

Teacher tip: These lessons have been taught with multiple-age buddy classes for over 12 years with great success. This is a wonderful opportunity to bring together students from various grade levels. As “big friends”, we had grade 2 and grade 5 students paired up last year.

Amazing resource!

This was a great tool that I shared with students from my high school for special needs. The students learned so much and could reflect. Unfortunately, my assessment of the activity was flawed. My planning was flawed because most of my students struggled to cut things. The future I’d precut the items so they could choose. The lesson was well-designed though.
