Tessellation Christmas Tree: Collaborative Christmas Activity & Christmas Craft

Tessellation Christmas Tree: Collaborative Christmas Activity & Christmas Craft

Can be used for 1st – 8th, Homeschool students.

Includes: PDF, 42 pages

This project is the perfect whole-class Christmas activity. It connects the individual with the group using tessellations and it has a ton of “wow factor” when complete. It is a great lesson for holiday season because it shows how our individuality can be combined with other people to create a greater whole.

Each student decorates, colors, and cuts out their own Christmas tree-shaped piece. The best part is that everyone’s pieces are perfectly connected to form a class Christmas Tree. It includes each student’s contribution. How fun!

It’s fun for kids and easy for you as the teacher. I’ve done everything I can possibly do to make this a successful project – I even included a teaching video! The process is as simple as color, cut and assemble. You have a lot of options to tailor the project to your particular class.

Once the pieces are finished and put together, they will make a stunning door decoration, bulletin board display, or a festive decoration just about anywhere in your school. Also would make a great decoration for holiday concerts or Christmas plays!

A full tree, as I’ve designed it, will have 25 pieces (but you can easily make many different size trees – making it great for any class size!).

  • Students will each work on an individual tessellation piece in the shape of a Christmas tree – I have included 11 designs (each fitting on a regular 8.5” x 11” piece of paper.)
  • They will color their own trees.
  • Once their individual piece is finished, they will cut it out.
  • Then the individual tree pieces will be assembled into a much larger, tessellated Christmas tree made up of everyone’s individual tree pieces! This is so much fun!

  • Written instructions
  • Tessellation teaching video
  • Star and tree base templates
  • 11 tree designs (2 sets of each)

I have included 2 sets of these 11 designs.

Set #1 has the background color of the tessellation tree designs already assigned (alternating between green and red like the examples in this resource.)

Set #2 does not have a background color assigned. This is to allow you to make as many variations as possible. It is possible to want all of the pieces to be green, or to allow your students to make multicolored trees.

The final tree measures approximately 28” wide at the base of the tree and 40” high without the star and base, and 50” high including the star and base.

Depending on your class size, you can easily make a smaller tree or a larger tree. You can make trees with 4, 9, 16, and 25 pieces. If space is limited or you have more pieces, you can add another row or use 36 pieces. You can find more information in the resource.

You can use all the designs I’ve included. You could choose just a few designs. I’ve made it so the pieces will tessellate (connect together) so you can use them however you like!

Before you start this project you could show my TESSELLATION TEACHING VIDEO to your students. In this video, I give your students a basic introduction to tessellation (so you don’t have to). You can also see how the project works. Next, you can take it from here! You’ll get access to the video once you purchase this resource.
